The island state in the Indian Ocean is not only the oldest site of sapphires, but also blessed by sustainable mining to this day. In Singalesian, Ceylon is called "Rathna Deepa" and means "land of gems". The Ceylon sapphire still holds its title today and stands worldwide for highest quality due to its unmistakable purity and color.




MINING - THE MINES IN SRI LANKA
In the highlands of Sri Lanka the natural treasures wait some meters deep. The minerals are found as sapphire crystals in the mines. The mining is traditionally done by hand and requires a lot of athletic skill and muscle power. The mechanical mining is forbidden for the protection of the environment, sustainability and renaturalization is prescribed in Sri Lanka.

The cutting of the rough stones is done by hand, this wonderful precision and technique is impressive. After pre-cutting for the desired shape and size, the sapphires are facet cut for optimum light reflection and brilliance.
